"If you could pick my profession for me based on what you think I'm meant to do, what would it be?" It is literally an expansion of: "What do I want to be when I grow up?" But.. from a different point of view. My niece received a few comments on the question. It was one I commented on which is rare for me to do. Family tends to be biased on most topics but in this little ladies case, even through biased comments, it was the simple truth. Ever been truly inspired by someone that was just a kid or teen? Ever been so proud of them that seeing them accomplish even the little things made you smile even if you were down? Well, that is how I feel about my niece. I'm not supposed to play favorites and maybe as the rest grow up, I won't have one anymore but she is as close to a favorite as I've ever had. (or ever want to have since I know it isn't right to do) Reading what others wrote and then comparing what I did to it made me remember when I first started thinking about what I wanted to do when I grew up. Apparently, my own dreams for a profession simply weren't meant to be but that doesn't bother me anymore. The topic made me realize I was basing my dreams on what others wanted and had nothing really to do with myself. I realize I never settled on what I wanted. Everything I did was based on what others wanted and life ripped even that from me. I stopped and started so many things, I never completed a single one. I never thought to ask that particular question. Not in that way, anyway. You have to know someone really well to answer questions about what you think they should spend their life doing. You have to know their interests, the things they are good at and the very things that make them happy and show who they truly are. In order to do any of that, that person needs to be an open book about every aspect of their life. Few people ever are that open. (she is, thankfully) So... are you doing what you were meant to do with your life? Have you found your dream job? Did anyone ever offer their own thoughts as to what they felt your profession should be? (If they did, do you feel it was what they thought you should do or what they just wanted you to do?)

For me... I wanted to be a teacher and to teach people how to write. That dream never faded but it went from being a dream job to being just a dream 'hobby'. Before that, my mother wanted me to "Just write" and before that was said when I was just a kid, she wanted me to be a doctor or a lawyer. As a kid I wanted to do hair and that seems very common with little girls. Some keep the idea and some let it fade away. I let it fade away. For a long time, I had no clue what I wanted to do and so I stopped thinking about it and told myself I'd never be anything because others wanted me to do things I didn't want to do just because: "You'll make a lot of money." When my mother realized I didn't care about how much money I could make, she started paying attention to my writing. She said: "Well, you need a teacher to teach you grammar and punctuation but your stories and poetry are good. You have a good imagination." At the time, I saw the negative in what she said but I did enjoy writing and could see myself teaching others to write also. I had no particular grade in mind, just an age which was the young teens. They were easy to work with and all had vivid imaginations and that included those who thought they couldn't write.
Then life took a turn and after graduating, I stopped caring about a future career and just wanted a future. I became a mom not long after that. I had taken accounting in high school and thought I'd finish what I started in that but got bored with it so I quit taking classes. I tried again while pregnant but again quit. My dad mentioned business so I took that a year or so later and once again got bored so I quit. I got into computers and really enjoyed learning a small amount of programming in the form of apps but stopped that when it began to get too hard. I got into graphics just a few years ago but every time I paused to consider taking some classes, something else going on interrupted those thoughts. Now my eyes struggle with color and the print is harder and harder to read.
Now when I think about what I enjoy I remember all the art I used to create but know I'll never be as good as I would need to be with the issues with my eyes. Music was always consistent and so was writing but writing became the kind I'm doing now. I don't really see $$$ in either. Not enough to live on anyway. I considered hobbies like the whole candle making thing and know that requires more money to ever really make enough to live on. I get bored with it too though so... what will I do with the rest of my life and will it make me happy? I have no idea.

When I was a kid I wanted to be something else when I grew up on a weekly basis. When I got to choose my subjects in secondary school, I purposefully kept my options open by selecting things more likely to be entry requirements later on. Then by the time I graduated I was pretty sure I wanted to know more about programming so that's what I did. I don't recall giving any serious consideration to what sort of profession I'd end up in or wanted to be in. Then I ended up getting a job still without aforementioned consideration So did I find my dream job? No, because I simply didn't have one. In any case, I like putting things together and I've learnt a variety of languages, patterns, libraries, and general purpose skills along the way. As for people offering their thoughts on what I should do... My parents, supportive folks that they are, shared a thought or two. Along the lines of things they thought I'd be good at or would suit me.

Sounds like you more or less let yourself guide your own hand which suits the question from yet another point of view.
haha. You've heard me say it several times before.. Things come easy for you and to you, even. I do wonder if things will ever not come easy for you.
Out of curiosity, did your parents share anything that could be considered opposite of what you do?
Overall, it would have been nice to say I had supportive parents but I didn't. I had a supportive stepfather in most things but he even discouraged some of the things I wanted to try to learn how to do. His reasoning he took to the grave because I was never one to question it. I spent more time questioning everything else instead.
It does make me wonder if I had been raised differently and not been though the things I had been, if I would have followed my own dreams or at least settled into an actual career. It's something I'll never know.

I never really had a job/career that I dreamed of and after my twin passed away I had 0 desire to go to college. After graduating high school I applied to Walmart. 5 years later I had to retire.

I'm more curious about how your interests could have predicted a dream job for you if life hadn't been so cruel. More of a what if you had a do over switch but that is best suited to a different topic. One more set for being inventive since reality would never allow it. (not in this lifetime anyway) Out of curiosity, did your parents share anything that could be considered opposite of what you do? Not that I recall. I think it was mostly engineering stuff, so building things like I do now but a bit more tangible Tangible certainly sounds more 'old' school' to me.. at least this time. lol
