The question was asked 'what is your definition of Non-Fiction'.
And my answer is:
"well, damn. Hell. I don't know. I guess, it's well, real stuff, mostly"
But remember: I'm coming from the swamp of a PhD in Metaphysics, I write science fiction, I describe myself as a 'half-drunken, half-crippled, ex-sportswriter', I spent 20 years covering politics and sports, so, asking me what IS non-fiction, I have to respond with the question:
"you tell me where reality ends and fiction begins, and I'll do the same"
and now, I need two ice cubes for my booze? You OK?

As for the PhotoEssays.
Sometimes those are planned, and sometimes they're not, and you never have any idea going in which will come out better.
For Instance, two from a year or so ago:
NOTE: This photo essay was unplanned, but as chance would have it, the Desk, who is a Professional after all, had its camera and a notecard with it, and so, You can attend the archery event as well.: you are welcome – Doc L

"Now Lady Ishtar espieth the beauty of Gilgamish: saith she, 'Gilgamish, come, be a bridegroom, to me of the fruit of thy body Grant me largesse: for my husband shalt be and I'll be thy consort. O, but I'll furnish a chariot for thee, all azure and golden, Golden its wheel, and its yoke precious stones...' "
