Standing in front of the class I clutched my sheet of paper. As my classmates grew quiet and turned their attention to me, I started to feel nervous, but excited. When the teacher signalled for me to begin, I held out my paper and read the first line.
"Today I went to the beach," the memories of that day came rushed back to me as I started to speak. It had been a beautiful, sunny day. Not a cloud in sight as the endless ocean spread out before me, sparkling in the sun. The cool breeze made the grass wave as I set forward.
Descending from the dune the path disappeared and I stepped onto the warm, white sand of the beach. "There was a lot of sand," I said as I remembered the fine sand between my toes. Arriving at the shore, the water had felt cold as it splashed against my ankles. "There was also a lot of water."
Overhead seagulls circled looking for food, their cries lost in the sound of the waves. "The seagulls were noisy in the sky. I saw one eat a French fry," I continued. The birds had left me alone but the wind was not so kind. A sudden lurch blew my straw hat off my head. Enthusiastically, I shared the event with my peers, "The wind made my hat fly and I had to chase it!" The water had splashed up high as I ran along the shore chasing my hat. Luckily it did not get far and the wind dropped it onto the sand.
After securing my hat I sat down and ran my hands into the wet sand. "Then I built a huge sandcastle," I said thinking of the hours I had spent building bridges, walls, and towers; using my fingers to create crenellations.
As the sun had made its descent, the sky had turned from a clear blue to vivid shades of purple and orange, and the sun turned a deep red. "I saw the sun set before I went home." After watching the last rays of light disappear below the horizon I had followed the path up into the dunes again.
Lowering my paper, I looked around the class before finishing with: "This was my day at the beach."
